So while discussing all these ideas and trying to think of a name, we did the old iPod shuffle trick to find inspiration and Either/Or by Elliott Smith came up. The track was mixed by Larry Crane in May 2010, at Jackpot! Recording Studio. Smith’s former Heatmiser bandmate Neil Gust plays doubled drums on ‘I Figured You Out,’ which was recorded by Smith at Heatmiser House in 1995. Smith was dismissive of the song and once called it “a stupid pop song I wrote in about a minute.” Either/Or is ranked 130th in the overall chart, 28th in the 1990s, and 3rd in the year 1997. This version of ‘I Figured You Out’ was recorded as a demo for Mary Lou Lord, who later recorded a version of the song for her Martian Saints EP. Either/Or is a music album by Elliott Smith released in 1997. Among those tracks is the previously unreleased studio version of the song ‘I Figured You Out’ (listen below). Either/Or crept out twenty years ago today on a relatively tiny, Portland-based indie record label, with no fanfare beyond a couple of good write-ups in. The second disc of Either/Or: Expanded Edition features five live multi-track recordings from the Yo Yo A Go Go Festival in Olympia WA in 1997, as well as three previously unreleased studio recordings and one b-side. Kill Rock Stars is planning an expanded edition of Elliott Smith’s Either/Or to mark the 20th anniversary of the landmark album ( as Stereogum points out). ![]()
